Fire Door Safety Week: What It Is and Why It Matters
Fire Door Safety Week is an annual campaign run by the British Woodworking Federation and supported by the Fire Door Alliance, taking place from 22nd–26th September 2025. Its aim is to raise awareness of the critical role fire doors play in saving lives and protecting property during a fire.
Research in 2023 showed that while many people believe they understand what makes a fire door safe, 57% of the UK public could not identify a faulty fire door. This makes Fire Door Safety Week’s 2025 theme of “Recognise it, Report it” all the more significant.
Why It’s Important to Spot and Report Incidents
Fire doors are a crucial aspect of maintaining fire safety in a building. When working correctly, they prevent fire and smoke from spreading, giving occupants extra time to evacuate and firefighters a better chance of controlling the blaze. When they fail, however, the results can quickly become catastrophic.
Too often, problems go unreported because people don’t know what to look for or who to tell. A propped-open door, missing certification, damaged seals or broken closers mean the door might as well not be a fire door at all.
Reporting issues promptly, whether as a building user, manager or contractor, can prevent small defects becoming life-threatening failures.
Five Things to Check for Fire Door Safety
During Fire Door Safety Week, we’re highlighting the 5-step Fire Door Check to raise awareness about the function of fire doors. It includes:
Certification
Make sure the fire door has the correct certification label or mark. A certified door ensures it meets certain performance standards.Apertures
Check for any holes, cut-outs or openings (for example around locks, mail slots or vents). These must be correctly sealed or fire-rated to maintain the door’s integrity.Gaps and Seals
Look at the gaps between the door leaf and frame, and between the bottom of the door and the floor. Seals (intumescent strips or smoke seals) should be in place and undamaged.Closers
Fire doors must close properly, usually via a door closer mechanism. If a closer is damaged, adjusted badly or missing, the door may be left open or not seat correctly.Operation
The door should open and close smoothly, latch correctly and not be propped open. Everyday wear and tear can affect hinges, hardware and alignment, all of which can compromise safety.
Together, these five checks form a quick but powerful way to identify issues that could compromise protection.
Our Fire Door Safety App
Keeping track of fire door safety across many doors and buildings can be challenging. Issues can easily arise and go unnoticed between inspections, and manual record keeping makes resolving things hard.
Software like Aurora’s Fire Door App helps by letting you:
Scan a door using a QR code to pull up its history and find any previous defects
Tag door-related findings to interactive floorplans so you can see where issues are located visually
Track door defects and corrective actions in a dashboard, filtered by risk and date
Store evidence of completed work (photos, certifications) so you always have a ready record when you need it
These tools make it easier to not just spot fire door problems but to report them, fix them and maintain oversight over an entire property portfolio.
Fire Door Safety Week is about raising awareness and taking action. Whether it’s sharing resources, encouraging conversations, or committing to regular inspections, every step helps protect lives and buildings. By getting involved, you’re showing support for safer communities and setting the standard in your sector. If you’re ready to make fire door recognition, reporting, and repair seamless across your portfolio, book a free demo of Aurora’s Fire Door App today and turn awareness into action.
